On the edge of a quiet cul-de-sac lay a timber cottage built in 1951.

Over the years fire standards change, and the client found out that they lived in a high fire danger area. We had the site and surrounding area surveyed so we could understand the extent of the slope and the density of the bushland. We also got a fire report completed and the area was nominated as the highest fire zone which is called flame zone.

 

Our approach was to design a house that spanned over 3 levels catering to both the slope and the expansive Northerly aspect.  We specified the design to be constructed with Hebel cladding on a steel frame and all tiled floors, which does not only enhance the thermal comfort and efficient but ensures full compliance with councils bushfire ratings.

Our design included some clever fire shutters concealed in the wall structure which is not visible on the outside of the building.

The finished house achieves maximum fire resistance rating; a 7.5 NatHERs star rating and improved solar gain.
